About Yukon Quest
The Yukon Quest is a long-distance sled dog race held in the far north of Alaska and Canada. First run in 1984, the event was created to celebrate the historic winter trails used during the Klondike Gold Rush and the era when dog teams were essential for transport, mail delivery and trade across the Yukon region.
The original race covered roughly 1,000 miles between Fairbanks, Alaska and Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon Territory, following remote wilderness trails through mountains, forests and frozen rivers. Mushers travel with teams of sled dogs and must carry much of their own supplies, relying on skill, endurance and careful dog management to complete the journey.
Often described as one of the toughest sled dog races in the world, the Yukon Quest is known for its extreme winter conditions and long distances between checkpoints. The event has become a major symbol of northern mushing culture, attracting competitors and spectators from around the world while honouring the historic role of sled dogs in the communities of Alaska and the Yukon.
