Location Info

Sedgefield Racecourse is a National Hunt (jump racing) venue located near the village of Sedgefield in County Durham, England. Set in open countryside, the course is known for its friendly, informal atmosphere and hosts a regular programme of race meetings throughout the year, typically from autumn through spring.

Horse racing at Sedgefield dates back to at least 1732, with officially recognised meetings established in 1846. The course developed from early hunt gatherings into an organised racing venue, with a formal racecourse company formed in 1927. Despite facing potential closure several times during the twentieth century, ongoing investment and redevelopment helped secure its future.

Today the racecourse operates as part of the Arena Racing Company group and hosts around 16–17 race meetings each season, including feature events such as the Durham National. In addition to racing, the venue is used for a wide range of events including conferences, weddings and outdoor functions, making it a versatile events location in the North East of England.

Saints Sled Dog Rescue

Saints Sled Dog Rescue (SSDR) is a UK charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming sled dog breeds, particularly Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. Founded in 2013 by Heather Saville, the organisation was created after a rescue dog named Athena required urgent medical care that no other rescue would take on, prompting the launch of a specialist sled dog rescue.

Operating nationwide across the UK, SSDR works with dog wardens, pounds and other rescue organisations to take in unwanted, abandoned or neglected dogs. The charity provides fostering, behavioural assessment, veterinary treatment and carefully matched rehoming, supporting both dogs and owners through the process with ongoing advice and lifetime rescue backup.

In addition to rescue work, the organisation places strong emphasis on education and responsible ownership, highlighting the challenges of owning high-energy northern breeds and working to reduce the number of dogs entering rescue. Through outreach, demonstrations and community support, Saints Sled Dog Rescue aims to improve understanding of sled dog breeds while continuing its core mission of giving every dog a second chance, regardless of age, health or behavioural needs.
