Iditarod 2025

Mon 3rd March '25
- Mon 17th Mar '25

Location Info

Alaska, USA is a state known for its subarctic and arctic regions, vast wilderness, and deep association with sled dog history. While not a single venue, Alaska contains extensive trail systems, forest roads, snow routes, and established dog-sledding regions such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, and the Yukon–Kuskokwim areas.

Terrain and conditions vary widely across the state, from coastal forest to tundra. Surfaces depend on season and region, ranging from compact snow and ice in winter to gravel and forest tracks in summer-access areas.

Course Description

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race covers nearly 1,000 miles across Alaska, beginning near Anchorage (with the official restart in Willow) and ending on the Bering Sea coast in Nome. Mushers and their teams traverse remote wilderness, mountain passes, and frozen rivers in one of the world’s most demanding endurance races.

The course follows the same route at the start and finish each year, but alternates through the interior to include different communities:

  • Even Years (Northern Route): From Ophir, the trail heads northwest through interior villages such as Ruby and Galena before rejoining the main route at Kaltag. This option is slightly shorter and more direct.

  • Odd Years (Southern Route): From Ophir, the trail dips southwest through the historic ghost town of Iditarod and additional Yukon River communities before reconnecting at Kaltag. This route is longer and expands community involvement along the trail.

After rejoining, both routes follow the Yukon River and then the windswept Bering Sea coastline through villages like Unalakleet and White Mountain before the final push to Nome.

This alternating route system ensures a consistent race challenge while sharing the event’s impact across remote Alaskan communities.

Directions

Planning to drive to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from the UK? Excellent. Here’s how:

  1. Start anywhere in the UK and drive confidently toward the nearest western coastline. Any will do, you’ll be improvising soon anyway.

  2. Continue driving until you reach the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Pause briefly to question your life choices.

  3. Proceed straight ahead across the water. (You may need to upgrade your vehicle to “amphibious mode.”)

  4. After a few thousand miles, aim for United States, specifically the scenic northern bit known as Alaska.

  5. Make your way to Anchorage, then continue to Willow for the official restart. If the roads disappear, you’re on the right track.

  6. Swap your car for a dog sled (parking is much easier) and follow everyone else to Nome.

Alternative route:
Fly. Honestly, just fly.

Iditarod

The Last Great Race On Earth®

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual long-distance sled dog race held in Alaska, widely regarded as the most famous sled dog event in the world. The race typically runs each March, covering roughly 1,000 miles between Anchorage and Nome, with mushers and teams of up to sixteen dogs travelling through mountains, forests, frozen rivers and Arctic tundra.

First run in 1973, the race was created to test the skill of mushers and the endurance of their dogs while commemorating the historic freight routes that once connected remote communities across Alaska. These trails were originally used by Indigenous peoples and later by miners and traders during the late-nineteenth-century gold rush.

Today the Iditarod is both a major sporting event and a celebration of Alaska’s mushing heritage. Teams typically take 8 to 15 days to complete the journey, racing from checkpoint to checkpoint across some of the most challenging winter terrain in North America. The event attracts international attention each year and remains one of the defining traditions of modern sled dog racing.
